Gem: The definitive visual guide by Aja Raden is a book about gems, rocks, and minerals.
The book has color pictures for many different types of rocks. Also, there is an index where I was able to look up information about quartz. The index is where you find the word you'd like to know more about, and then the index lists the pages for where to look it up. There is a glossary where you can look up words you don't know yet to see what it means; you start by finding the first letter of the word and look through that list. For example, "brilliant cut" in the glossary means it's cut into a good shape for gems to reflect light and "maximize a gemstone's fire and brilliance" - like a rainbow!
I learned the top 5 locations for gems produced:
Australia for opals - 95% are from there
Myanmar for rubies - 90% are from there
Columbia for emeralds - 70% are from there
Africa for diamonds - 65% are from there
Madagascar for sapphire - 50% are from there
Overall, the book was awesome and great for beginners to learn about rocks and minerals!
